• I’m on an old version of WP and finally(!) getting round to tackling spam on my blog (its becoming a tsunami). As an interim step, I unchecked the following, in Options>Discussions:
–Allow link notifications from other Weblogs (pingbacks and trackbacks.)
    — Allow people to post comments on the article

    And these are checked:
–An administrator must approve the comment (regardless of any matches below)
–Comment author must fill out name and e-mail (<–and enter passcode from Trencaspammer plugin)

And yet…spam still arrives, now 15 minutes later. How does that happen? Is there a lag-time?
BTW–Is there anything like Comment Blacklist, but for IP’s (I’m sure there must be, just asking…)

    Any anti-spam suggestions welcome…

It still keeps coming. I don’t get it. How can I be getting comment-spam when nothing (no one) is allowed to comment?

Hi there, if you’re using an old version, maybe now is the time to upgrade. You can use several spam, plugins, although Akismet which comes with wordpress now by default is excellent and clears most of the spam. Most of the comment spam I get now is from bots, with Akismet its best to mark it as spam as it arrives, this way Akismet learns, and blocks them in future, which seemss better than constantly deleting them.Check out bad behaviour also.
    I hope you get there.
    Mike.

General Options>Membership: Anyone can comment–unchecked, Users must be registered–checked.

    And still, the spam comes…

My site should be something close to read-only now, but I’m still getting spam. Can anyone tell me how that’s happening? At this point, I don’t want to try anything else (ie plugins) until I understand the nature of why my site is still accessible to spammers. TIA for any help.

    Thanks Mikey1,

I am thinking of upgrading, but if I’m gonna do that I also wanna redesign a bit, so that’s bigger job than it might appear. I’ve heard the newer WP are better at battling spam, but I never assume upgrading will be ‘painless’, so I’m not inclined to do it just to stop spam. But thanks for the suggestion. As I just posted, the site should be pretty much read-only, and yet I still get comment-spam. How does that happen? At this point, I’m just curious how they can get around even an old version of WP.

I use 2.1.2 with the Akismet plugin (not built into this version) and have no problems with spam appearing – Akismet catches virtually everything. I also require approval and membership to comment, yet it comes in, albeit caught by Akismet.

If you don’t want the hassle of updating – like me – just get the Akismet plugin, get your key, and install it. Ridiculously simple to do and worry no more.

Oh. cool. didn’t realize Akismet came as a plug-in. I’m back to being a noob. Other than blogging, I haven’t kept up with the tech since I customized my site. Which is another reason I’m dreading updating–customized code tweaks. I did plenty of commenting, but it’ll prolly still be a chore. arrrggghh. Thx for the heads up, Saurus.
