Installing from a Fantastico backup (2 posts)

Okay, I had a WP 2.6 blog installed through the Fantastico option of my webhost, HostICan. It was running fine, until I attempted to upgrade to 2.6.3, again through Fantastico.

At that point it wouldn't let me log in, saying the database needed to be upgraded now. When I clicked on Upgrade Database, it would think for a couple of minutes and then return a screen with the WordPress logo on it and nothing else.

The instructions my webhost gave me for reinstalling looked like this:

    - Remove the directory /home/[username]/public_html/[domainname]/councilmanic
    - Untar/home/[username]/fantastico_backups/councilmanic.backup.1226659117.tgz
    - Empty the database [username]_wrdp1
    - Import the file /home/[username]/fantastico_backups/councilmanic/backup.sql into the database theagate_wrdp1
    - Move /home/[username]/fantastico_backups/councilmanic to /home/[username]/public_html/[domainname]/councilmanic

I got as far as the fourth step before I was stymied.

So, knowing there was a Fantastico backup, I deleted the WP 2.6 instance and installed a fresh version of WP 2.6.3.

I still have this Fantastico backup, including the key file "backup.sql." Anyone have advice for me on getting this data back into a fresh install of WP?

.sql files can usually be restored via phpMyAdmin.

    See: Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup

You should also be able to use an editor such as NotePad+ to look at that file.

Make sure you have a least one extra copy of that file if it is your only backup of your database. Note that hosts might also backup your databases.
