Ok I had same problem with inability to resize images and use thumbnails because it was grey and after I remove podpress it was fixed! Podpress just had a new version and I will also test to see if the new podpress still has the error when utilizing images.

I don't have podpress installed and I have the same problem.

I'm happy the problem went away for folk when podpress was removed. But what should I do if I don't even use podpress?

I have the same problem. No podpress installed, running PHP 5.2.6 with GD enabled. Works fine on my local xampp site but on the remote server the option for small, medium, etc is greyed out. I temporary solved the problem by opening the image in photoshop and re-saving it, then uploading it again via Wordpress. I have however still not found out what the difference between the two images is. Looks exactly the same in all settings and under information when right-clicking on desktop and selecting properties...

My Large button is grayed out too. I installed PodPress to replicate the problem mentioned here. It did. All of the buttons except for Large were grayed out.

I dumped PodPress and I'm back to square one. ;0)

    Hi

I too am having this problem and it only jsut started of the past few days.

My 'large' option is greyed out.

I've disabled all plugins (I never has podpress installed) and it didn't make any diffrence and i've confirmed with my host (hostgator) that GD is enabled.

This is really frustrating. Can anyone offer a plain english explaination and fix? Have now spent 5 hours on trying to fix this.

    Thanks

I have this problem in WP 2.8. The media.php hack fixed it for me, but it would be really nice if this could be fixed permanently.

I don't have podpress installed, btw.

I figured this one out. Make make that the php-gd rpm for redhat/fedora is installed. On other distros, make sure that gd is enabled in php.ini and remember to restart Apache.

    Makes sense...no gd module available...php can't resize images...no thumbnails.

Just updated to WP 2.8.1, and it's now broken again...

I tried to apply the same media.php hack to the new version, but the code is changed and I can't figure out how to do it.

    Anyone else seeing this?

    Running 2.8.4. No plugins.

The image is 800 x 200 pixels. The Flash uploader offers me to create a thumbnail (150 x 150), a small image (300 x 73), the large button is grayed out, and then full size (800 x 200).

If I edit media.php as suggested above (setting max to 600), will I get a 600 x 150 inserted, and the full "linkable"?

Thank you for making superb software!

I got it - I understand how i works now.

Using the Media setting under General settings, I changed "medium" to 300x300 and Large to 500x500 (in my blog the main column is abotu 500 wide).
I make all images 1000x1000. Then, if I want the text to wrap around a picture, I select medium. If a want the picture to fill the whole "flow", I select large (500x500) and center position.

All images are linked to their full version.

    Again - excellent software!
