Alphabetical Sort in Database for List of ITEMS (not posts or categories) (6 posts)

Hello, I'd like to add a plugin for an alphabetical sort of a database. The main purpose of it is to list all the dentists that send me their information, so that it would be easy for the visitors to find them.

The post in which I intend to use it in here --> http://www.dentnews.net/?page_id=2090

I don't know what to use. Please give me an idea. For now on I just post the information one below the other.

    Thanx in advance

If I were in the same situation, the first method that I would use is something like this (there are methods that are much better!):

    • Create a category called 'ΚΑΤΑΛΟΓΟΣ' (which I presume means Dentist?)
    • Setup each dentist as a new 'post'.
    • There are two methods you could follow to arrange your posts alphabetically; the 'manual' method of editing a template or using a plugin.
    • Although it's "simpler" to edit the template manually, sometimes plugins such as AZIndex or others might offer a little more flexibility.
    • Create a link to the category from the top navigation bar. I find using something like Page Links To works quickly and easily, although there are other plugins in the Repository that you could consider.

Hopefully someone will come up with a better method, but if you do plan to add lots of dentists to your list and would like them listed alphabetically automatically, perhaps it might be worth converting each entry to a post.

There is the potential of using Custom Fields for the different variables for each dentist (e.g. Website, telephone number) and you could consider a plugin like More Fields for a more 'complex' listing.

The second method might be to use an Addressbook-like plugin such as Little Black Book or Address Book (not sure if the latter is compatible with WP 2.6.x as it only says 2.5)

I am writing back in this issue, since AZ Index plugin doesn't support any other languages except for English, so I cannot use it.

Thanx anyway Mosey... but there still no solution in my problem. :)

Maybe you are using the wrong tool (WP) for a task that has nothing to do with blogging or content management.
You need a directory/listing software for that, not WP.

@dentnews: Thanks for the clarification. I really should have used an online translator to translate ΚΑΤΑΛΟΓΟΣ :p

Sorry to hear it didn't work for you. I am not really familiar with sorting posts with 'special characters' alphabetically, but whilst browsing around, I did come across a Greek (official?) user-to-user WordPress forums

    http://www.wordpress.gr/forum/

so I don't know if it might be worth asking there about how to sort the characters alphabetically. If it is possible, the same concept of each entry -> post could still apply.

@moshu: I would agree that this is something that is probably better done with a directory/listing software, but seeing as the rest of dentnews' site uses WordPress, and this is presumably only a sub-section/one part of many, imho it may still be worth considering some of the WordPress plugins available.
