I was running a WordPress blog, I think (though I’m not sure) that it was v. 2.0.2.

The other day I got a comment in the moderation queue; I clicked “approve,” but instead was taken to a page that said something like (sorry I can’t remember the exact wording), “You must upgrade your WordPress. Click HERE to upgrade.”

Well, I foolishly clicked it, because I had gotten similar messages in the past, and had clicked it in the past, and there was no problem. Except this time, after I clicked it, my blog disappeared entirely. The main page is completely blank — nothing there, just a white screen.

I went to my ftp program and looked at the actual files on the server, and they all seem to be there, exactly as before, unchanged — at least as far as I can tell. So, the blog still ought to appear as normal.

What is the problem? I realize this description is rather vague-sounding and incomplete, but that’s how it appears to me. I don’t want to start fiddling around with the blog’s guts behind the scene, lest I do something wrong and somehow erase all my pre-existing posts.

I have some memory of this problem being described and resolved on this forum before, but I can’t find it. Any help would be much appreciated. I’ll try to supply extra info if necessary. As you can tell from my phraseology, I’m fairly ignorant of all this code stuff, so please be specific in any questions. Thanks!

    Yes, here is the site:

As you can see — nada, zilch, complete blankness. Not even an error message.

Thanks for the link. I looked at it, but nowhere on that page does it say how to fix the problem — it only describes how to diagnose it.

I looked at my “error log” (I hope I’m looking at the right one), and it says this as the most recent log entries:

[Thu Nov 6 11:03:11 2008] [error] [client xx.xx.xx.xx] File does not exist: /home/userxxx/public_html/404.shtml
[Thu Nov 6 11:03:11 2008] [error] [client xx.xx.xx.xx] File does not exist: /home/userxxx/public_html/robots.txt
[Thu Nov 6 11:01:20 2008] [error] [client xx.xx.xx.xx] File does not exist: /home/userxxx/public_html/404.shtml
[Thu Nov 6 11:01:20 2008] [error] [client xx.xx.xx.xx] script not found or unable to stat: /home/userxxx/public_html/cgi-bin/prxjdg.cgi
[Thu Nov 6 11:01:16 2008] [error] [client xx.xx.xx.xx] File does not exist: /home/userxxx/public_html/404.shtml
[Thu Nov 6 11:01:16 2008] [error] [client xx.xx.xx.xx] script not found or unable to stat: /home/userxxx/public_html/cgi-bin/prxjdg.cgi

Is this in any way relevant? Does it mean that a file called “prxjdg.cgi” should be in the “cgi-bin” directory in “public_html”? I looked in my “cgi-bin” directory, and it’s completely empty.

If that is indeed the problem, is the solution to upload a fresh “prxjdg.cgi” file to the “cgi-bin” directory? If so, where do I file the “prxjdg.cgi” file online somewhere?

And if that’s not the problem, what other steps should I take? Thanks.

I think I found another error log that might be more apropos. The final entries say this:

[18-Oct-2008 00:18:10] PHP Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/userxxx/public_html/wp-includes/wp-db.php:102) in /home/userxxx/public_html/wp-atom.php on line 8
[18-Oct-2008 00:26:50] PHP Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/userxxx/public_html/wp-includes/wp-db.php:102) in /home/userxxx/public_html/wp-rss2.php on line 8

Does that illuminate the situation at all?

At this stage, I think I’ll just need to delete everything and reinstall from scratch, since I don’t know what else to do — unless someone has a suggestion.

Further up in that new error log that I found is this entry:

[15-Oct-2008 20:43:21] PHP Warning: Division by zero in /home/userxxx/public_html/wp-includes/template-functions-links.php on line 512

Now, in my ftp directories, there is indeed a file called “template-functions-links.php”, but in the new version of WordPress 2.6.3, that file doesn’t exist — so there’s no way to upload a fixed, properly functioning new version of it.

At this stage, it seems like my blog has a hybrid of 2.0.2 and 2.6.3 WordPress in it, and I really think the best solution seem to be to delete all the files, and re-install 2.6.3 from scratch. My question is, is there any way to know which files I customized in my existing installation, so I can keep the customization in the new install?

The only ones I can think of are “wp-config.php” and everything in the directory with my “theme” in it.

Are there any other files which often get customized?

Sorry to be so ignorant about my own blog, but I installed it two or three years ago and have long since forgotten what I customized.

There was a trojan running around for a bit.

    (@qpqpqp)

Well, I’ve marked this question as “resolved,” not because I ever found out what the specific original problem was, but because I simply deleted my pre-existing install and re-installed 2.6.3 from scratch — so the blog has now re-appeared and works fine.

So, my question no longer needs answering. Thanks!
