• Hello,

I have certain post topics that have possessive names, like:
BASIL’S FLAME BROILED CHICKEN & RIBS

The issue is that when I search for basil or basil’s, the post does not show up in search results. If I search for basi or bas, it does show up in search results. I think this has to do with the apostrophe in the title, but I am not sure. I am using a plugin called “search unleashed”, however the results are the same with the WP search function.

Any ideas? Does WP choke on special characters in titles? If so, is there a way around it?

    Thanks.

  • This is likely an issue with fancy or curly quotes. By default, WordPress uses these, and unfortunately both WordPress and Google searches do not treat them the same as their keyboard equivalents.

    Basil’s (fancy quote)
    Basil’s (regular keyboard apostrophe)

I use the Unfancy Quote plugin for this issue. All though the non-fancy versions do not look nearly as nice, they are much friendlier for searchers and for seo. I don’t know if Search Unleashed is messing around with apostrophes or not (I’ve never used this plugin).

    Thanks for the reply.

After fiddling around a little more, I realized that when I was testing the WP search function earlier, I had neglected to deactivate “search unleashed” and it was still interfering. I shut off the plugin and tested with the WP search function and that issues was resolved.

So it would seem that it was the plugin.

    Thanks again.
