• fsockopen is the function that makes Akismet work, makes the Google XML sitemap plugin work and so many other WordPress items. However, what can a person do when the hosting environment does not allow fsockopen?

Is there any way around it? I’d hate to loose Akismet!

Future versions of WordPress will have new HTTP API methods that will use one of several different methods, depending on what is available. I expect Akismet will rapidly transition to using those once 2.7 comes out.

Well that sounds like good news. Now I just need to find something to stop the flood of spam currently. 🙁

Try the Simple Trackback Validation plugin and the Cookies for Comments plugin. Together, they work pretty well.

Thanks. I’ve got those now installed.
