• I was trying to adjust the width of my text posts to make them wider, and in the process, I seem to have entered some code into the theme stylesheet that was a really huge mistake.

I am horrible at these things and tried to follow simple directions, resulting in the inability to edit my page or view it whatsoever. The error reads as follows:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '.' in /home/theturni/public_html/wp-content/themes/turning-pages/functions.php on line 505

    How do I fix this?

The website itself is http://www.theturningpages.com if you wish to see for yourself. Thanks!

  • If you had only made this edit to the file, that is you had made no other changes to the theme’s default functions.php file, you can overwrite that file on the remote server (using an FTP Client such as FileZilla or your host provided file management tool(s)) by uploading an unedited or backed up version.

If you had made working edits. Download it (using an FTP Client such as FileZilla or your host provided file management tool(s)). Open it with a plain text editor, such as NotePad. Never edit with a Rich Text Editor (such as MS Word). You can then edit the file and remove the errant code.

Once the file is fixed, your site will run as it did before.

It is best not to use the theme editor for live site work, especially with functions.php as the above will occur and you will need to work outside the editor to fix anyway. Download file, make a copy, edit, upload back. Test – if error, upload that copy you made (making sure filename is correct). Then work on fixing the error. Do so when folks are very unlikely to be using site.
