There's no section on the profile page where it gives you an option to upload an avatar, I thought this came automatically when installing WP. Do you need to install an extra plug-in for that or are there certain plug-ins that stop you from uploading an avatar (I have Supercache installed)

I thought this came automatically when installing WP
you thought wrong.
gravatar support is built into 2.6.x -- thats a global avatar; see their site for info.
