Sudden inexplicable login failure (24 posts)

Seems to be a common problem from what I have googled. However, unlike most everyone who has posted on the subject, their failure at login was due to a Wordpress upgrade or a new plugin or a change in hosting companies.

For me, nothing has changed. Hell, I don't even know what version of Wordpress I am running because quite literally, I haven't changed a single thing about my Wordpress setup for at least 6 months... probably closer to a year.

I can no longer login to the Wordpress dashboard. It bounces right back to the login page. I tried deleting my cache. I tried erasing all my cookies. I tried replacing the wp-login.php file. Nothing is working. Can someone please help me understand this sudden failure?

    UPDATE----------
Looks like I am still on Wordpress 2.0.5

dito that same problem. when i go to login i get this error report from firefox and safari:

Redirect Loop: Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

Actually, I had that problem before and I was able to fix it by deleting my cookies. But this problem is different. Its not a loop. Its not a rejected password. It goes from wp-login.php to wp-admin (for a second), then back to wp-login.php without any indication as to why.

It has been tested on multiple browsers (Safari, Firefox) on two different Macs. Same problem.

I, too, get a blank screen suddenly when I try to reach the admin login, although the blog itself (http://ammusing.ca) shows up just fine. It starting happening today (25 September 2008). I'm not sure either which version I'm running; I haven't changed anything to it since Spring 2005 ...so perhaps V. 2 something. I do notice, however:

-- the file xmlrpc.php is CHMOD 000, but replacing it didn't fix the problem and none of the files in the system have an update date than way back when I installed WP

-- in the wp_users table, there was a user ID 18 with some html script tag point to http://search-again.net/js/js.js. (deleting it didn't help)

-- the wp_options table was definitely updated Sept 25 @ 3:14 AM (according to phpMyAdmin) and there are about 10 entries in there that I think look fishy (e.g., option_name field value is rss_2cffab547b99df8958e649141891b21d followed by the same with _ts at the end (not sure if I should delete those...)

Very strange! Any insight would help.

Oh, and another odd thing. In wp_options table, should all the blog_id value really be 0 (zero)?

having the same trouble on several blogs, all of them versions 2.X

could this be a security exploit?

    for fu**s sake.

http://ammusing.ca is running 1.5 -- if youre having ANY issues, how about you start by UPGRADING. If your block is hacked, and it appears atleast one compromise has taken place, based on your post above, you have only yourself to blame.

Anyone? Is there a more direct route to tech support? Would it help if I threw some cash at someone?

what do you want? You cant login? thats fine. We cant register to see if WE can login, since you have that disabled, so we cant even tell if its specific to you.

No-one can tell you precisely whats wrong.

You go through the normal process of troubleshooting.

    Disable plugins --

YES, you CAN disable plugins without logging in. You use an FTP client and move the plugin directories outside to outside of the plugins directory.

If youre using ANY caching plugin, start there.

There just isnt a miracle solution.

This is the "tech support": all volunteer helpers and none of them will help you as long as you run an unsafe version because there is nothing we can do.

.. and in regards to this:

Anyone? Is there a more direct route to tech support?

There isnt "tech support" for wordpress. There are free forums (these) that are 'manned' by volunteers (us).

Would it help if I threw some cash at someone?

I'll fix almost any problem for money, but you cant solicit here. email me off the forum: whoo ATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT village-idiot.org

Wow, thats a shame. So if I understand correctly, I am being told that 1) I deserve what I get because I haven't repeatedly upgraded Wordpress, and 2) good luck finding anyone to actually 'help'.

    Perfect.

I dont believe that you are being told either of the things that you said, at least not by me, and you got an offer to help.

What you chose to do with it is up to you. Given your wonderful attitude, maybe I dont need any extra $$ today.

I've actually had the same problem, starting the same day, using the latest version of WP. Was working fine, then suddenly only blank screen for a login.

Same here, with September 25 being my last post before the redirect loop started. This is looking to be a trend.

Not sure what version I'm on, but I think 2.6--upgraded not too long ago.

i actually fixed the bug on my blog. looks like it was just some plugin going nuts. don't know which one yet, but i've disabled them all via FTP and the logged in just fine. I tried to reactivate some of them - a few gave me error messages i'm still trying to figure out, others got back to work as normal.

flight404 - i see why you're bummed, but keep this in mind: nobody's working for you here.

My problem is apparently like a stiff neck. It just went away on its own after a few days. I didn't change anything. Very strange as it was happening from any computer I tried to log on with, so not a cookie or cache issue.

I wish I could say the same. No change, and no 'support'.

No need to be rude, whooami. Simply pointing out that my installation is too old to be salvaged would have been sufficient. I stated upfront that I hadn't changed anything in my WP setup in a very long time, as I'm among those who believe that if it's not broken, don't fix it -- and it hasn't been broken until now. Upgrading was on my list of options all along, but I thought I'd ask here first in case that could be avoided with an easy fix. I'm not that invested in blogging, let alone WP.

Back to the drawing board for me ...and thanks for nothin'!

Interesting. I have the same problem except I upgraded from 2.6.5 to 2.7

Is it a permissions issue maybe? No message or error. It just stays on the wp-login page.

I have clean the cache on my browser. How would you clean the cache for the actual blog?

    Thanks

How can one log into their blog and retake control on an issue like this? As far as I know I may never see the control panel of my wordpress blog again. I think this is a serious issue, and one that should be addressed. If it is already being addressed in another more recent thread I have not found it in the search.

    Thanks

I have had many people from several computers try logging in to the wp-admin area. Of course it gets redirected to wp-login. After entering in the information nothing happens. You remain on the page with the info logged in. It's not catching or something. There are no errors...

We have all tried different browsers, cleaning cache, etc.

Looks like I have upgraded to 2.7 from the looks of the login page. I have tried re-uploading 2.7 files. I have updated the config file with the sample=config info with the proper database info. I have even optimized my tables... just to try anything...

    All this with no success.

Anybody else with some advice? I have been unable to get in now for 3 days. Thanks

    Ah ha

    My answer is here:
    http://jasoncosper.com/archives/wordpress-remvphp-and-you/

Make sure to change the password in your DB, update your config.php with the changes.

Also rename your plugins folder temporarily to plugins.bak or something...
