Cannot Activate Any Plugins - Fatal Error (1 post)

I'm having some problems with plugins on WordPress 2.5.1. This is a new installment of WordPress on my own webspace and not an upgrade from a previous version.

I can't seem to activate any plugins, even the ones that came by default with the installment ("Akismet" and "Hello Dolly"). It detects the plugins in the plugins directory fine, but every time I try to activate any of them, it says "Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error."

I thought perhaps it was my theme (coffee-desk) that was causing problems, but even when I switched back to the classic theme, the problem persists.

Just as a side note, I have modified the WordPress code a little, but only parts of the code that control commenting. I wouldn't think that would affect my ability to add plugins, even plugins that won't modify commenting functionality. My blog is sitting in a sub-directory of my site. My main site runs on Joomla. I've changed the code a little in WordPress, so it matches the look and feel of my Joomla theme, its menus, and its member functionality (simply put, if your a member on my site, when you log-in, go to my blog and try to comment on an entry, it will auto-fill the fields with your user profile information, auto-approve your comments, and use your profile's avatar instead of the WordPress default).

Any ideas of what the problem could be or where I could look to figure it out. The statement "Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error" isn't exactly a helpful and descriptive error message in resolving the issue.
