• Hi,

I’ve just switched my WP web-site from localhost to bluehost. Now it is on temporary URL. I was wondering when do I switch to a permanent one and what is the difference between these two?

Have you discussed this with your host?

Normally when you’re ready to use a “real” URL, you point a domain name that you own to the host’s name servers.

As to when, that would be up to you – when do you want people to be able to reach the site using the domain name?

The difference is that a URL you plan to use permanently normally consists of a domain name, whereas a temporary URL usually is messier (with numbers, punctuation marks, etc.) and so less convenient.

In any case, when you do switch, you need to change the appropriate settings under Settings > General. You may also need to do a search-and-replace to change instances of the old URL which have been written into your site; for instance, the paths to image files.

Thank you for explanation! Now I get it:)

    You’re very welcome.
