When you set the featured image, a window will popup titled “Set Featured Image”. Under that title, you will have two tab choices, “Upload Files” and “Media Library”. Just make sure that you select the “Upload Files” one. 🙂
Nope. It takes me to a legacy looking page where I get three tab choices. From Computer, From URL and Media Library. And the Media library is a list view. Gone is the grid from 3.9.2 where I could drop a new image. And even if I can upload a new image, there is no “OK” button that can take me back to the edit page so I have to go all the way back to the control panel->posts->edit
I also cannot add keywords or choose from my old ones or add new categories.
This is starting to look like a big mistake. Restoring 3.9.2 will cost me money as I’ll have to get my ISP to restore the root directory and the database… This is the first time a WP upgrade has gone wrong…
It may be the theme or a plugin, and not 4.0 at all.
It makes sense to do the standard troubleshooting: deactivate ALL plugins and switch to one of the default themes (TwentyFourteen, -Thirteen, etc.) See if the problems persist.
If the problems are gone, re-activate plugins and theme one by one, testing for the problem in between. This can reveal what the conflict was.
That’s the place to start, in any case.

I agree with Patty above, it definitely sounds like a plugin or theme is conflicting with the display of the media library.
I did as suggested, and it was “Comprehensive Google Map Plugin” that was messing with everything. I’ll send the developer a note and hope he /she can fix it. If not I’ll have to look for a new map plugin. Thankfully it was not one of my most frequently used features….
