That’s a Categories widget, you can remove it via Appearance -> Widgets in your blog’s Dashboard.

If there is nothing in that widget area, then what you’re seeing is a default widget. You can remove it then by adding any other widget. If you want a blank widget area there, add a blank Text widget instead.
