Support » Plugin: WP RSS Multi Importer » Keywords in Widget / Assigning Categories Removes the Feed

  • Good day, Allen.

You have done an absolutely wonderful job with this plugin. Thank you!

I am using the importer in a side-bar widget. Everything works great until I try to assign categories to the feeds in order to use keyword-filtering. Once a category is assigned, the feed disappears from the widget area.

    What shall I do?

Thank you, again, and best wishes!

are you using the plugin’s widget or the shortcode? Also, if you use keyword filtering and the filter eliminates all the feed items (because it is not finding words you want to filter on), the feed will not show (simply because the filter is doing its job)

By the way, I am utilizing the plugin as a text widget using only the pasted-in short code: [wp_rss_multi_importer hdsize=”14px”] rather than the plugin’s customizing widget, itself.

Beyond the hdsize, all other custom options including template style are set in the customizer and global settings areas of the Importer Settings Menu on the WP-dashboard, and everything works just fine.

    Thank you.

    So, I ran a test.

I applied the category to a news item that was showing up in the feed prior to assigning it. I added a keyword that was in the headline of the article to the category. Once I did so, the story and all others from that same publication, disappeared from the feed.

are you including or excluding those keywords

    Hi.

I am NOT excluding these words. In other words, I have added the words but did not check the ‘exclude” box.

Thank you for being so responsive on a Sunday.

How does one pay you for your support? Once this is up and running properly, I would like to include some sort of remittance for you in my bill to the client.

    Thank you.

well, first of all, all I ask for is a good rating for the plugin….what is the url of the RSS feed and a word you are using when entered makes the feed disappear?

    Thread Starter SLWright

    (@slwright)

Well, a good rating goes without saying. 🙂 But, how do you pay for the time you are spending on this? don’t answer that; it was a rhetorical question and none of my business. But, still, I should be able to pay you if I wish to. I did not pay for the plugin, and this is a lot of time you are taking. Time in life is painfully limited and not free! I don’t believe in working for free.

At any rate, here is the feed info:

    Feed source: New York Times
    Feed url: http://rss.nytimes.com/services/xml/rss/nyt/Technology.xml

    Category Settings:
    Category ID # 1 | Highlight Topics | [wp_rss_multi_importer category=”1″]

Highlight topics: | blank field CAT.IMAGE | blank field CAT.TAGS | FILTER WORDS: “PATENT REFORM”, “PATENT TROLL”, “RIDE SHARING”, “SHARING ECONOMY”, “BURKE NORTON”, UBER, LYFT | Exclude box not checked

“Sharing Economy” is the text in the article title I ran the test on.

    Thank you.

ok…this will take a few days to figure out (also, I’ll be gone for several days, so it may be a week or two before I can get this fixed.

actually, I had a chance to look into this and bottom line my plugin can’t do what you are trying to do, given the nature of how the data is structured. You can go back to an earlier version of the plugin

    http://www.wprssimporter.com/back-to-2-68/

which doesn’t use a database for the feeds, so won’t have this problem..but, of course, I’m not supporting that version anymore.

    (@slwright)

Beyond not offering support, what is the tradeoff, or loss of functionality/performance (or whatever), by using the earlier version that does not use a database for the feeds, please?

    Thank you.

basically, the earlier version is fine..but it cannot handle many feeds, will not have all the improvements I’m going to make for 3.0 onward…all of this because the earlier version doesn’t take advantage of the database.

If you want support, you might try a different plugin – which might give you what you want.

Thank you, Allen. I checked out the other plugins before choosing yours, because it appears that only yours can be used in a widget at all. So, well done with this!

I will propose to the client that instead of drawing feeds from individual publications, I will instead covert keyword-deliminated Google News Alerts into RSS feeds, and then use those with your plugin. With the exception of not being able to know the publication source prior to opening the story, this should be a very very good secondary strategy. Getting 80% of what I want is probably close enough!

Thank you, again, and, really, you should figure out a way for people to at least “tip” you or something. Let me know if an option arises. 😉

    Have fun and thanks!

SLWright, I agree with you about hitting the tip jar for “free” plugins, especially this one where the author is providing so much support! You can send Allen some money via Paypal – the link is on the Description page of the website – http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-rss-multi-importer

Look for the Author box and Allen’s name, and there’s a link to Donate to this plugin.

Regards from another grateful user 🙂
