Featured Image URLs not mapped

This has been brought up a couple times in the forums, but no clear answer has been found. I have a network on domain mapping where, on the the subsites, the URL for featured images are not being mapped. They are being shown on the front end with the unmapped URL.

I know I can fix it by manually editing the site details in the network admin, but I also know that manual edits are frowned upon. Can anyone replicate this?

Note: normal images contained within post and page content are mapped correctly, it is only featured images that are not getting the mapping applied.

The top image on that page is a Featured Image, the bottom image is an image set into the page content.
