• I setup a site for someone as charity and the site has since become infected and 1and1 took it offline. They provided a log and support and im on the path to getting things back.

My issue is this. I want to redo the site from the ground up but i would like to carry the old posts over. I cannot however get into the old site to export the data. Some of the site files that became infected are locked and i cant transfer them to off the server. I was planning on running the site local to do the export but that may not be an option.

Im not concerned with addins etc, just posts. Could anyone point me to a resource or explain what my options are. Thanks

  • Hey,

You can still access the database I assume? so you could export the data. Or did you asked our customer care to see if they could do that.

Yes i was able to export the SQL database. I wasnt sure if the db contains all the data i need or if some of it was contained in the files i pulled from the server via FTP.

What would the process be for migrating the content into WP(considering my situation)?

If it’s locally then you can create a new database and import the content.

After that you need to change the domain in your database. http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL should give you a head start.

For the files it’s a bit tricky. I don’t know why my colleagues put it offline. In general what you could do is:
    – Download WordPress
    – Download the plugins/themes from the original source.
    – Get wp-content/upload and check if you don’t see weird .php files.

Sorry not sure i understand. I wiped the site from the host (after backing up the db) and have since installed WP and done the initial setup (in a new db). Is there a way i can take the old posts and import them into the new site from just the db backup?

An idea would be to wipe the database and import your backup. If the prefix is still the same then everything should be fine.
