After an absence of several months, I tried to update some images on my site today, I managed to delete the old image, but when I tried to upload the new image I received an error. I tried uploading the image first by editing the gallery in the post, and also via the media library – the image is only 309kb.

Sorry, here’s more info, when I tried to upload an image file through the gallery in the actual post I received this error: “Error portraits01-000.jpg Failed to write file to disk”.

When I tried to upload the file via the media library I received a similar error message:”portraits01-000.jpg has failed to upload due to an error Failed to write file to disk”.

I’ve been using the Expositio theme on my site for about two years without problems, but I haven’t updated or worked on my site for a few months, heres the url: http://louisvorster.co.za

I know that my hosting space is a bit tight, I only have about 9mb available, but the file was only 309kb. I did however manage to delete an image via the media library in WP admin. I use Mac OS 10.8.5 and Safari 6.0.5 and WP 3.5.

If I can think of more info I’ll post it, thanks.

Thank you for clarifying. “Failed to write file to disk” is a somewhat generic error message. Best to contact your host and ask them to investigate their log files. The most common causes are:

    • The server’s hard drive is full
    • The server’s tmp folder is full
    • There are not sufficient privileges set to the folder being written to

WordPress will use the upload_tmp_dir folder for file uploads set within the server’s php.ini. The php.ini also may or may not be user editable based on the host’s setup.

Regarding permissions, those are generally 644 for files and 755 folders, but again, your host may have specific setting requirements. For more information on permissions, please review: Changing_File_Permissions

thanks, I contacted my host. They made me do a ping test, looks like they recently made some changes to their system. I’m busy with the ping test now.

I think its fixed now from the host side.

    Thanks for the help.

That’s great to hear! If you have a second, it would be great, too, if you could mark the thread as resolved. That will help out the other volunteers and moderators in ‘seeing’ which threads still need help.
