I am trying to setup a test environment using Xampp using localsite and am experiencing issues when I import the database dump from my WordPress site.

I have copied over the contents of the root directory into the relevant folder on //localsite/wp and am able to access the WordPress control panel and verify the structure, themes, plugins etc are all copied across.

I then deleted the current table and imported the sql dump via phpmyadmin. Then changed the wp-config file to point to the new database, and password. I have also changed the URL in wp_options via phpmyadmin to //localsite/wp and then restart the server via Xampp.

When I refresh the //localsite/wp where the install has been located I get a stripped out version of site with all formatting and images removed and am just left with the text and links.

When i try and login via wp-login.php I get web page unavailable and am at a loss as to what I am doing wrong as I have read everything I can find regarding database migration and restore both here and on the web in general.

Any advice or assistance would be gratefully received as to what I am doing wrong or why this is happening?

UPDATE: I resolved the main issue by replacing all reference to the previous page URL and replace it with the localsite/wp URL and the site structure is now working fine.

I can see it has imported all of the media into the media library but none of it is showing and when I click on a link I am getting Object Not Found error 404 so I still have some link issues.

    Advice would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: Although the site structure looks OK various parts are missing from the WP dashboard eg. Plugins, Settings, to name but a few.

It seems as if it is one step forward and two steps backwards.

Go to Settings > Permalinks and just click Save. Try that 🙂

Thanks for responding, my previous update mentioned “Although the site structure looks OK various parts are missing from the WP dashboard eg. Plugins, Settings, to name but a few.” so of course I am unable to get to settings to update the permalinks.

I wonder why these are missing from the WP dashboard following the import?

I managed to login as another user on the DB which had admin settings as for some reason my user did not. This worked find, permalinks updated and everything running as it should.
