• About the time Akismet came out with that “Silently discard the worst and most pervasive spam so I never see it” feature, I started noticing that my first access to the WP Admin interface of the day was really slow, and sometimes it timed out. I had that auto-discard feature turned on at the time, and I thought maybe that was why it was slow.

Once I got the admin interface up, things worked normally, typically until the next day. Looking at the spam I did get, I found it hard to fathom why it wasn’t already discarded under the “most pervasive” rule.

I have another blog that is heavily commented running under the same server account, but with very little spam, and there are no speed problems with that one.

I have jumped to the conclusion that the difference between fast admin access and slow access is the number of spams received between accesses, typically in the 1000 range for me.

I turned off the “most pervasive” discard, but that made no difference (neither in the slow access, nor the number of spams in the spam queue).

I am running WordPress 3.9.1 and Akismet 3.0.1.

    Plugins installed:

    Akismet
    Contact Form
    HotFix
    Limit login attempts
    TPC! Memory Usage
    Use Google Libraries
    W3 Total Cache
    WP Photo Album Plus

So I’m looking for suggestions and help in understanding the problem.
