• I’m sorry… and I’m sure the answers to all this are buried somewhere in here, but I’m pulling my hair out.

I’m not as tech savvy as everyone else seems to be, so plain simple english would be greatly appreciated…

    Here is my set up:

I have a domain which I have registered through GoDaddy. I have hosting for the domain as well…

All the instructions seem to be about getting hosting through a service connected to WP. How can I set up wordpress at my registered domain, and host it through godaddy?

    Please, any help? Thanks!

I host some WP sites at GoDaddy, no problem. The install instructions are basically the same there as anywhere else. Just FTP all the WordPress files to your site. Then use the GoDaddy hosting tools to create a new MySQL database. Then run the WordPress install procedure, as per usual.

What specific issues are you having?

Have you read tutorials like these?

The only caveat is to make sure that you use Linux hosting on GoDaddy. The Windows hosting doesn’t work with WordPress.

Otto… thanks for the info. I’ll take a look at the tutorials… I’ll need to speak to GD about it, because I am on a Windows Hosting plan.

    Thanks agian.

You can switch to a Linux hosting plan on your account page. It’s the same price and everything.

Otto, I’m on a Windows hosting plan with a different host. My husband was able to get a wp install up & going without switching to linux, but we’ve had nothing but problems with mine.

Would it be easier with linux hosting?

    Thanks!

Yes, it probably would be much easier. Linux based web hosts are the standard, the only reason to host on Windows is for those apps written in ASPs and such.

Also, some Windows hosting will work, I was speaking specifically about GoDaddy’s Windows hosting, which will not work (I found that out the hard way).

Thanks, Otto. If I can’t get it to work by the end of the day, that’s what I’ll do. I’m tired of wracking my brain.

Would you mind looking at this question? I’m sure it’s something really simple I’m overlooking. Thank you!!

Stuperb, you might want to go to godaddy.com and log-in with your customer# or login name (that info is probably in your e-mail from them) so you can use their site builder program in control panel. I have a web site that is a Windows site and I just went into control panel and the site installed WordPress for me. I don’t know if godaddy offers WordPress, but it does have a blog program that they have a demo of on their page.

Now one thing with my Windows site WordPress is that the URL path is almost like a subdomain URL. For example instead of say http://stuperb.com/wordpress, it would be like http://stuperb.godaddy.com/wordpress. So you might ask godaddy tech support on how to install WordPress because there might be a different URL path you need.

thanks, flashpal. I have Dotster, not GoDaddy, and they assured me that wp would work on their Windows servers, so I’m not sure what’s going on.

I know Dotster used to have a wp installer, but i’m not sure they support the current version.

thanks for the tips – I’ll definitely check into it.

Well, you can have them install whatever version they have, then download the plugin “wordpress automatic upgrade” it’s really awesome. You upload it, like other plug-ins, to your wp-content/plug-ins folder and then it will appear on your plug-in menu. Just activate it and it works a treat. It takes you step by step through the upgrade, makes copies of your blog and data from your old version. You don’t have to go to the WP site and download and then upload a bunch of files, the plug-in does all of that for you and fast. Give it a go, especially if it’s a brand new install.
