I'm new to WordPress having been forced to migrate when Blogger dropped FTP support. I'm setting up a home page (not a blog) and I want to use the one-column layout twenty ten provides, but I can't figure out where to plug in the call to it.

When you are editing a page, in the section "Page Attributes", click on the Template pulldown. Select "One Column, no sidebar" and you will be all set.
Interestingly, the Twenty Ten one-column content width is the same as the width with a sidebar - just centered.
I have a TwentyTen child theme called Twenty Ten Weaver that supports several different column layouts, including a single, wider column. It also changes the single-page one-column to a wider page size.
You can stick with the basic Twenty Ten look, or tweak almost anything about it - colors, fonts, and much more.
wpweaver, how did you change the column widths? i am trying to adjust my home page to fit 800px x 600px images and they keep getting condensed.
