creating home page

I am trying to create my home page. The permalink added the page name after the .com. When I edit the permalink and delete the extension, wordpress automatically replaces the page name with a number extension. So when I type “mydomainname.com” into google a blank home page shows up and the page I am trying to make my home page is an additional page even though the only page in my menu is the one I created. Thanks for your help!
