where are the ::before pseudo-element assigned?

    Hello folks,
    I’m using 2014 theme (wp3.9.1) and so for it’s great,
    but since the last WP site I’ve developed (3.7.x)
    I’ve seen a bunch of new :before and :after pseudo elements;

    in particular inspecting my html I find a ::before assigned to #main-content & #primary div and I don’t understand where these elements are defined (in my css I can only see some :before .. ),

    what’s the usefulness of these elements in a case like this?

    Plus I think that’s how Twenty Fourteen achieves 100% height in its sidebar.

    I don’t understand where these elements are defined

    To clarify, they aren’t elements. You’re seeing it in your browser developer tool there and it’s only because of the developer tool, not because of the markup. View the source of your page to see if you can find these ::before things. I think there’s a setting to turn them off in Chrome’s toolbars if you want to.
