• When YOU updated my wordpress site with WordPress 3.9.1 (running Weaver II theme) It has become extremely difficult to create an attractive blog post. I am NOT techy – that’s why I chose WordPress. It used to be I could create a post in a few minutes, but now it seems I have to have some basic knowledge of code or something just to produce a post. BRING BACK THE OLD WORDPRESS!!!! This is horrid at best! I can’t see what I’m creating with pictures and text unless I hit preview, and then the pictures and text fall in patterns I haven’t chosen. This is SO UNPROFESSIONAL!!! Then, I try to contact you and all you have available is a FORUM???? REALLY?????

When you’re editing a post, take a look near the top-right of the editor box. There should be two tabs there, Text, and Visual. It sounds like you’re currently in the Text tab, so try clicking the Visual tab.

I try to contact you and all you have available is a FORUM???? REALLY?????

Everyone is a volunteer here, even the developers, so a forum is really the best way to “share the load.”

Nope… I am in Visual mode. I don’t understand HTML which is what is in the text tab.

Ok, just to confirm, you’re in the Visual tab, but everything is appearing in HTML regardless?

James… that is so nice of you to contact me so quickly… I just want you to know that whatever was done recently – like within the last 6 months – to the site, it’s made it so worthless for me. I really hope things can revert back. it’s just not the user friendly configuration it used to be.

I’m sure we can figure this out, no worries. Nothing much has changed to the post editor, and certainly not anything to make it more complicated. πŸ™‚

no, everything is not appearing in HTML. When I insert a picture, the text moves. I choose the picture to be to the right of the text, it shows on the left until I preview. then all the other text is resistant to my changes. I’ve pressed enter about 10 times to separate a paragraph and it refuses to do so. I also miss the font that it used to be. I used to be able to see pretty much what it was going to look like before hitting preview, now it’s all a surprise… a bad surprise. I have to go back and forth many times just to get something to look acceptable. I’m so NOT happy.

Hm, that is incredibly strange. Let’s try a few things first, I’m suspecting perhaps an incompatible plugin or theme editor style.

First, try deactivating all plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does nothing, try switching to the Twenty Fourteen theme and see if you’re able to edit posts as expected. I know this won’t look like it used to in the editor, but this theme has its own editor style (which matches the front) and should work properly.

Here’s an example of the old format written in March of this year:

    here’s today’s post:
    http://lorettasmith.com/make-take-class/

I can’t get some of the text to cooperate. I just gave up… I don’t want to have to change my whole website just because of this problem πŸ™

I am terrified to do all the suggestions you said. I don’t want to switch themes and I don’t understand all the plug ins. My site is my bread and butter. I cannot be guessing and playing around with it. It all happened when WordPress was updated without my permission. everything changed instantly. so it’s not me or my site, it’s something that wordpress did.

Ah, I see what you’re referring to now. πŸ™‚

Please try those steps above to get the editor style working again, that will help, but ultimately the problem with http://lorettasmith.com/make-take-class/ isn’t entirely WordPress’s fault. You would certainly be able to see and correct it easier with a working editor style, but it’s not exactly why this is happening.

so it’s not me or my site, it’s something that wordpress did.

Not necessarily. If a plugin or theme developer didn’t test their product prior to the update (they have about a month to do this, sometimes longer) and thus release an update themselves to correct any problem, it’s really not a WordPress problem. Like I said, everyone is a volunteer here, even the developers. The official directories currently show 32,044 plugins and 2,605 themes. The few developers who volunteer their time to WordPress do their best to ensure compatibility with everything, but they can’t guarantee it. Rather than a few developers testing almost 35,000 add-ons with each release, it’s up to the developers of those add-ons (each often with only one add-on to their name) to do so. That’s how a volunteer community survives, otherwise I’m sure there’d be no volunteers. πŸ™‚

Anyway, on to what’s actually happening.

This is essentially image layout 101. Every block of text and every image is essentially a block element itself. Just like working with blocks of wood, they can’t overlap, they appear relative to each other, and they try to minimize whitespace, so you need to adjust the spacing and size of those relationships to accomplish what you need.

When I look at the nicely laid out http://lorettasmith.com/supporting-physical-healing-in-your-home/ vs. today’s http://lorettasmith.com/make-take-class/ I see one big difference, there is much more text in the first one. When you have more text, there is a larger content block for your image block to relate to. Less text means smaller blocks for the images to relate to, and they all kind of jam in together wherever they can in an attempt to minimize whitespace, and they make a mess. πŸ™‚

So, all of that to say, it’s not really a WordPress issue, just a layout issue with how web design has worked for many many years.

Try to think of everything as a block of wood in a left-aligned environment which minimizes whitespace whenever planning your layouts. If the block on the left is the same size as or larger than the block on the right, everything will be wonderful. If the block on the left is smaller than the block on the right, you’ll have a big mess.

change your site’s theme to twenty fourteen and deactivate ALL plugins.

Did it get fixed? If yes then it is one of the plugins or your theme

Are your plugins and theme up to date?

    (@l-smith)

I updated my plug ins today… and it doesn’t matter how much text is in there.

    Moderator James Huff

It will, trust me, I’ve been doing this for 10 years. πŸ™‚

Just to be sure, try posting a ridiculous amount of text in each block, you’ll see them line up.

Anyway, try those steps above again so we can find out why that editor style stopped working, otherwise we really can’t help.

    Thread Starter L Smith

    (@l-smith)

plus, I never had to think of everything left aligned before. most of what is written here is greek. I just want the user friendly site back.

    (@l-smith)

yeah… I realize this is futile… thanks anyway
