    In WP admin, it would be so awesome to be able to add the option of having the uploads folder either by ;
    – year/month
    year
    – no sub-folder

    That way, it would make it easier with site backups, and less overfilled than with the present year/month only option.

  • I’d disagree with that, for one reason only.

    Every directory has a limit on how many files it can hold. EAch direcotry can hold around 65,535 files (depending on file names), and as you can imagine, with large sites that are adding lots of content, it won’t take long for that number to be reached. As an example I was working on a real-estate site once, and they wanted to keep everything archived in one place, so they did… and they overran that number of files in around 2 months.

    Also some hosts block you at fewer than 65k images :/

    Thanks for these infos guys ! Now I know more 🙂

    I still think it could be a good option for many small and medium websites. I am saying this because we already have the choice of no sub-folder, or many sub-folders. To me, this idea would fit right in the middle of these two previous option.

    Personal : My blog is running WP for maybe 6 years so I have 72 folders to look into 😉 Just 6 folders with about 1000 files each… seems easier to me.

    It was really nice when we could choose to rename the wp-content sub-folder.
