  • How are these super long URLs being generated? Are you saying that you have that many levels in your page structure?

    Joni,

Yes, I have 13 (I think) levels in the page, but each level only contains a single page with information regarding that particular city within Montgomery County.

I added some stuff to the original post to make it a bit clearer. Basically all of the pages are linked in a straight line from the home page to the last page. The last page links to the home page.

    Thanks!
    Jeff

Maybe I’m missing something here, but if all these 13 cities all have an equal relationship in being within Montgomery County (parent), then they could/should all be one level only below their parent in your menu structure. e.g.:
    http://mydomain.com/montgomery-county/alleghany-springs/
    http://mydomain.com/montgomery-county/blacksburg/
    etc.

This would shorten all your urls and better show their hierarchical relationships (Blacksburg is in Montgomery County, but Blacksburg is not in Alleghany Springs, in Montgomery County).

You will need to adjust your child menu settings so that all these cities are equal children of the main menu Montgomery County item, then you will probably need to edit the url slug of each page.

Finally, if this is the solution, then you will need to set up some 301 redirects in your .htaccess file to point any existing traffic to the new urls (back it up first!), and it would be a good idea to remove the old long urls from the Google Webmasters index for your site.

    Hope this is clear.

Thanks for the info. The problem is that for some SEO purposes, among others, I need to keep the pages in a vertical relationship, rather than spreading them out horizontally, all linking to the home page. I totally understand the reasoning behind WHY the URLs look the way they do and how they would change if the structure of the site was altered, but I need to find a way to make them look as in your and my examples above.

    Any ideas to do that?

    Thanks!
    Jeff

    I see.
Have you tried using the “Get Shortlink” option next to the url in Edit Page, which would return something like http://www.yoursite.com/?p=13

    Or experiment with: http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-url-shorten/
