• I have had several unfortunate “episodes” with the GeoTheme people.

The last of which was on Friday, June 20th, 2014, when I updated my copy of GeoDirectory, the free “Ultimate Business Directory” plugin.

GeoDirectory not only crashed my web site, but it completely removed my SQL database. I had to reinstall a version from the day before, which was, unfortunately, not a complete one.

I wrote to the “manufacturer” right away, after my host (BlueHost) let me know what had happened. They said they’d never seen a plug-in do so much damage.

And this, after six years of being a reseller (now on BlueHost) myself.

I have yet to hear from GeoTheme “executives,” but I have a feeling it will go not so well, as have my other troubles with them. I even bought their $350 GeoTheme package six months ago, but had so much trouble configuring it (and had no way of improving the messy and unprofessional customer “directory claims” feature), that I’ve now abandoned it in favor of making my own solution with my own developer team.

    Beware.

    Susan,

There is so much wrong with this review i will have to break it down bit by bit.

I have had several unfortunate “episodes” with the GeoTheme people.

    1. You have never posted on the GeoDirectory Support forum.
    2. You have only ever posted once on the GeoTheme support forum, which was posted at 22:47 and was answered then next day.
    3. The only support you requested by email before this was after you signed up to GeoTheme and your last reply was this:

    Stiofan, thank you!

I appreciate your support on a Sunday(!) and look forward to your product. I’ve been following GeoTheme for about two years now and have a project that could really use your product.

    Merry Christmas!

GeoDirectory not only crashed my web site, but it completely removed my SQL database.

    1. If here you mean it actually removed you SQL database then that would require either the “DROP DATABASE” SQL command or the PHP “mysql_drop_db” command none of which any of our products have ever included! If your database was actually removed then i would look at your server as this is not a fault of our products.
    2. If you mean just the tables and not the actual database then again all our code only ever drop our own tables, you have the code you can check it anytime.

I had to reinstall a version[database] from the day before, which was, unfortunately, not a complete one.

    1. WordPress recommends backing up before upgrades as do we you can check our installation instructions: https://wordpress.org/plugins/geodirectory/installation/ “We always suggest you backup up your website before performing any automated update to avoid unforeseen problems.”
    2. If you try to claim this was an automatic update please see here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Configuring_Automatic_Background_Updates. “Automatic plugin and theme updates are disabled by default.”

I wrote to the “manufacturer” right away,

    1. You sent a email to GeoTheme contact form (this is not a support address, and is not even for GeoDirectory)
2 Your emails to our GeoTheme contact form following up to this were for you asking to pay your GeoTheme subscription monthly, after we explained our system does not allow this you then emailed back a threatening sounding email, and now this(sigh)…

after my host (BlueHost) let me know what had happened. They said they’d never seen a plug-in do so much damage.

    1. If this is a true statement then you will be happy to provide evidence as such, this will be important for you and us in who we proceed with a defamation law suit against. (you, bluehost or both)

    1. your email was on a Saturday evening and not even to the correct place.
    2. The only “other troubles” you have is that you wanted to pay for your GeoTheme subscription monthly and we said this is not possible.
    3. “but had so much trouble configuring it”.. as i stated before you have posted ONCE on our GeoThem support forum and received and answer and you have NEVER posted on our GeoDirectory support forum, you have ZERO outstanding support requests.

    Conclusion
It is only you that claim to have experienced this problem, none of our other customers have complained about anything related. To make such bold claims you should provide evidence.
You claimed this happened on an automatic update

“Does your GeoDirectory theme auto update? Apparently yesterday it did so and completely crippled my web site.”

Plugins do not automatically update, so if it did it was most likely your doing. The fact that you did not update the plugin then see the result means it could have been anything, you could have been hacked for all i know, but for some reason you have decided this is due to the fault of our plugin. Please provide system logs and evidence from bluhost saying it was our plugin and we can proceed with a defamation law suit against them or if none is provided and this “review” and “claims” remain then we will proceed against you.

I agree with Stiofan. Extreme and damaging reviews like this should include sufficient evidence. It is not fair to the developers. These guys work very long hours and in my experience so far, they respond to questions and support requests as fast as they can.

After installing and activating the plugin, my website became blank white.
The only way to recover was to login via ftp and rename the plugin folder.
