Support » Fixing WordPress » how to recover archives after being hacked

  • I have been blogging for 3 1/2 years. Then someone hacked onto the blog and started posting as “author”. The posts seemed spam-like in nature in that they seemed like key search engine words for pharmaceuticals and nike sneakers. I tried to get help from yahoo but that went no where. So then I went into the site and started changing all the “authors” who had been posting, to “Subscribers”. The next day, when I opened the blog, all my posts and archives were GONE. There is a lot of material contained in the archives that has a lot of sentimental meaning for myself and others. I’m not horribly savy tech. wise but I’m not dense either so please advise.

  • Do you have a backup of your database anywhere? That would be the easiest solution. You can import the database using phpmyadmin or adminer. All of the information from your posts etc are stored there.

Now, if you don’t, then I might first suggest seeing if you can go back to any older revisions of your posts:

Ok, also, do you know if you have the right information entered into wp-config? In particular, the right database prefix?

I saw a problem like this once and the client just had to change the prefix to what it was supposed to be and they got all their content back.

This is also something you might speak with your hosting provider with since – depending on the host of course – they might keep backups for you. A long shot, but worth trying.

Good luck! If you need any more help just post and I’ll see what I can think of.

PS: Change all your passwords asap

Sadly, if your web host does not keep a backup of your database, and you have not been maintaining a daily and weekly backup using backup plugins, the data is likely lost forever.

There are a log of great free plugins you can use for the future. Try Backupwpup or UpdraftPlus to ensure this does not happen again.
