• Hey, I just signed up for WordPress and I’m looking for some help getting started. I have a good idea what I want, I’m just not sure how exactly to execute it.
I’m looking to create a website. My goal is to learn how to use the software since it could be a good skill to have, and I also want to find ways to make money through the site.

My site will present people with information on a topic, and ask how they feel about certain aspects of the topic. People can vote for common opinions on them, make short comments on the page, and have their comments up voted with the most up-voted comments showing near the top of the page along with the information I present. I would love to even take this a step further in order to get people to be active on my site, such as having a place where users can see their total number of up-votes across all their comments.

Again, I’m completely new to this so any advise on starting out would be great. I made a website on blogger before with pretty good success with SEO, but I’m looking to make something a little more professional now, have better stickiness and make more money on it. Any advice on where to go or what to do to make my ideas happen would be great. A good theme or plugins that would be good for me would be a great start too.
    Thanks

  • Hi manusoccer2014,

Welcome to WordPress, you’ve definitely chosen the right platform to learn and build websites that scale into the future.

The fastest way to start earning money on any site is through Google Adsense program and affiliate link sales. Saying that however, I would focus on building great content first. Content is KING… when you’ve built up a level of community where users come back to your site often and you start getting organic traffic from search engines into the 1000s that’s when you start looking at monetizing the site.

Out of the gate you’re not going to see much in terms of income you have to be willing to write for 6-12 months before you can expect to make any money worth mentioning.

In terms of technology I would go with a paid plugin such as https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/qa-wordpress-questions-and-answers-plugin/ . Having this type of structure of questions/topics and voting on answers it should be well defined from the start. You don’t want to be a year down the road where your website architecture is not setup properly and you have to scrap it and rebuild from scratch.

    Thanks for the comment

That was kind of my idea, I was going to get all the content done and optimized before really launching, and at that point I was going to likely spend some money on my site. But if I have to spend a little now to get everything going then I will.
I monetized my blogger site with Adsense a few months in and I’m over a half a million hits but I’m hoping to do better this time.

That plugin does look good and have a lot of the things I’m looking for, but does it have to ‘questions’ and ‘answers’? Can I make it say ‘Opinion’ or something every time it says ‘Answers’ on the site? Also do you know how much that plugin is? I can’t see it without creating an account first.
