[resolved] Error importing WXR file in WP 2.6 (6 posts)

I just exported a WXR file from a WordPress 2.6 installation, then tried to import it to another WordPress 2.6 installation elsewhere. After doing so, I received the following error message:

    "
    Invalid file
Please upload a valid WXR (WordPress eXtended RSS) export file.
    "

I searched through the forums, docs, & bug tracking db, but didn't see any mention of a solution for this. Anyone have any ideas on how this can be fixed?

I fortunately made a MySQL backup of the first blog, so I'll probably just insert those tables into the new MySQL db. But it would be nice to have WordPress handle this easily too, as I'm guessing others may experience the same problem.

    Thanks in advance!

I also had the same problem. I am changing hosting companies and installed WordPress 2.6.1 at the new hosting company. The installation at the old hosting company is also version 2.6.1.

If you have the XML exported from old blog, and import it to your new blog. Actually it is a cleaner install than the SQL which might have tables which did not automatically clean up when you unintalled a plugin.

a.I set up my new database first,
    b. uploaded the new WP files,
    c. uploaded compatible plugins and themes
    d. set up the wp-config.php with DB information,
    e. run the install.php
    f. after logging in with new username and password, activated plugins and configured settings
    g. add users if importing multi-blogger XML file, skip to next if not
    h. Manage > Import > WordPress (make sure that your max upload file limit is increased to handle XML file size)
btw, in this step, if at first you don't succeed, try and try again
    i. check the site out using default theme, if all right ...
    j. activate you customized or preferred theme.
    Good luck.
