   Well, why not the installer/upgrade script ping you with the URL of the site so that you can mantain a proper database of the WP blogs hosted around the world...
   Something like that, if it did not make sense... :P

   that would be a total invasion of privacy and will never be implemented. people who want to tell the world they're using wordpress can join the webring.

   "Total invasion of privacy"? If this was made an optional feature (Winamp does it) I don't see how it would be an invasion of privacy at all.

   There is already a ping back to wordpress.org from wp-admin.css (in the form of a referenced image). I don't know if the server catches it or does anything with it.
   With open source software, it's not like this is hidden or anything.

   yup u can have a checkbox of a sort on the installation page allowing us to announce ourselves to the WP world of bloggers!
