I've tried changing permissions of my theme files to 666, 777, 755, 644, 90210, 1-800-CALL-ATT, and probably a few others, and change has been successful. HOWEVER, the theme editor is still telling me that I need to change permissions in order to edit my files.
Even stranger still, editing a file offline and uploading it doesn't seem to change the theme either. This makes me think that wordpress may not be the "problem"
Any ideas from anyone on what's going on?

I am having the same problem. The files show permissions have been changed, but wordpress will not acknowledge the change.
This thread is 8 months old and looks like there has been no workable response. I will repost as a new post.
