Delete the two files from the server first, then upload new ones – if necessary, download a new copy of WP.
Don’t go reinstalling just yet 🙂
🙁 I’ve done that several times. I’m at a loss of what could be wrong. I’ve deleted the files from the server and uploaded new ones from a brand new WP download, with the same result. I have actually just tried a “soft” reinstall with exactly the same result!! I am about to delete everything and start again. I have exported my sql database file, which I assume I can reimport. Are there any other files that I should keep?
wp-config.php
wp-layout.css
are the main ones I think?
🙁
Tried changing your password directly ?

There are other pages there which may help if it does come to exporting.
You are hard-refreshing when trying all fixes ? And clearing cache / cookies ?
THanks podz. I think I tried everything. It is the weirdest thing. What I have just done is this:
redownloaded wordpress 1.2.2
created new database
reinstalled a new version of WP into a new folder
ie. completely separate install, the only thing that is the same is the domain
Still getting blank page when trying to login
??
I have never had this before, after many installs of WP. This all seems to have happened since I tried to fix the post.php on a different install of WP.
I am really stumped on this one. I have flushed cookies in both Firefox and IE but no luck. Is hard refresh pushing F5? The only thing I haven’t done is a cold reboot! 🙂
Any other ideas?

Whoa, what a debacle. I’ve fixed it, and even been able to restore my database (the secret seems to be to create a table, then delete all the table fields and content, then import the sql text dump backup; otherwise the import wouldn’t work, wouldn’t overwrite).
The problem seems to be the pricey Adobe Golive. This is great for editing css and php files, and for html editing, but I apparently haven’t grasped the site management of files, as I think I was uploading and overwriting the same post.php file (despite deleting it to the site trash and adding a new post.php from a new WP download).
Although I was sure I tried this already and it failed, I uploaded using my ftp client, and it works.
Still haven’t got pingback working though, any ideas?:-(

“and ended up with a blank page when trying to login”
– I have the exact same problem!
Does anyone know what causes the login problem and know how to fix it instead of deleting everything and starting all over? It seems to be the database that contains the problem as I have also tried to install a completely new WordPress in another directory.
Very, very frustrating!

Did you delete the files off of your server before uploading a new one from a new v1.2.2 download? Overwriting files over FTP can lead to incomplete transfers.
Ya, it is funny, I have had this same issue myself.
Where I want to log in and I am taken to a blank page.
Or if I log out I am taken to a blank page.
Of course refreshing the page gets me what I want.
And I have done several installs for friends as well as for
myself and you know what? It even is stated in the install process
that, when you get to the last step, and everything is complete,
” now just login, if you get a blank page try refreshing the page”.
Or something like that.
Anyhow it sounds to me like this problem was known.
I really like WP and hope that a solution can be found.

i had this issue and resolved it by ftp-removing plugins… yes PLUGINS were breaking my login page!
after i deleted the acronym plugin, everything worked perfect!
