I think the plugin is working as intended.
The title and read more link do link to the post, and the thumbnail/featured image does work.
What I am referring to is the content of the post itself. It displays the content of the posts as plain text, without line breaks, links, images, etc.
Here’s a pic of what I’m talking about:

On the left is the widget, on the right is the post.
As you can see, the widget strips the HTML tags.

You can use short code like [wpsp cat=’CategoryName’] such that html is shown on text widget also.
