WordPress auto updated to alpha without beta testing plugin

    A site I am testing auto-updated to the 4.0 alpha. I don’t know how this happened because the beta-testing plugin is not installed.

    I’d really appreciate some help here. What does WP look for and where when it decides which version to upgrade to? I know it looks for the ‘development’ string in the update_core site_transient, but how does this get set?

    Are you using en-GB? There was a bug in that package that resulted in WP misidentifying itself as 4.0-alpha. You are actually running 3.9.1. The package was removed as soon as the bug was reported and has been (is being?) rebuilt. Just run the upgrade again to correct this.
