   Do I have unrealistic expectations or is there a good shared hosting plan out there?

   I'm on a shared server with AN Hosting and the performance usually sucks. Google webtools has given me several "high response time" warnings. It generally takes 5 to 10 seconds for a page to load on my site.

   I feel like all the hosting companies make a lot of promises but I can't tell who actually delivers.

   country you are in, or most of your visitors in?

   if you can find a host in your own country, it would be generally faster compared to international hosts.

   the host should to be in the country most visitors will be in. ie faster for majority of visitors.

   I use a company called tera-byte.com and they are decent but yes...

   You are being unrealistic if you want fast performance on a shared server.

   I'm on Bluehost. I've never had a major problem with them and if speed is your primary concern then seem to deliver.

   I use them for 4 sites, the heaviest of which is here if you want to check out how fast it loads. I use wireless at home and it's fairly quick. Often it will depend on the individual viewers particular ISP.

   l do use aeyweb.com and wordpress is really fast, but prices is little more than others. never had a problem and easy to use.
