   I want to change the contents of the homepage (posts) without hurting seo for the blog.
   I realize there are widgets and plug-ins to do this but the big question is if change the homepage to a static page or point it to a different page, will that affect the search engine rankings for my blog?

   If the URL remains the same you will be fine.

   The rest is down to the contents of the page.
