[resolved] Convert entire blog to single category? (4 posts)

    So here's a stumper.

I'm converting 20+ blogs to a single blog. (Ha!) Now, the good thing is, each of these blogs actually only has one or two (five, at most) posts on them. No categories. Just different "about" pages for each blogger. The idea is to make each blogger a category on the new condensed site, and just run them all from a single installation. (No, MU isn't an option.)

My question is this: can I convert each blog and move it to the new area using the wordpress-to-wordpress XML file? Or will I have to do the database backup and slog through it? I'm hoping the first option is possible - even if it means after each import that I have to manually change everything to fit into categories. But before I get started, I was wondering if any of you all have tried something like this, and if oyu might possibly know a quicker way to do it (plugin, maybe? I obviously can't find the right search terms - i keep coming up with category plugins).

    Thanks!

well, an update. The move worked just fine. I had to manually create each blogger as a user for the new site, but after that is was a snap.

The thing I dislike about the Export/Import of the XML file is that it does not bring over any of your links. Why is this? I rely on the XML feature to migrate a blog from a testbed site to a live site and in this last instance, there were 44 links in one category and nearly 80 scattered across 3-4 more. The best I could do was import the links table, but even that, for some reason, wouldn't populate the link categories, even tho I'd created them on the live site prior to bringing over the database table.

I'd like that to be a wishlist item for future releases.

Glad to see you got at least this problem nailed down, without any help from the forum.

True - the blogroll links are gone. That's a good point. But we didn't need them anyway, so I didn't even notice. But yeah - it *should* move over your links as well.
