When installing the Sample XML file and Plugins, I’m receiving the following error:

Warning: An unexpected error occurred. Something may be wrong with WordPress.org or this server’s configuration. If you continue to have problems, please try the support forums. (WordPress could not establish a secure connection to WordPress.org. Please contact your server administrator.) in /home/onlytib/public_html/wordpress/wp-includes/update.php on line 287

Any suggestions why this is occurring?

Try using this plugin to get more information:

Thanks Samuel, here are the results.

Automatic background updates require a number of conditions to be met.

PASS: Your WordPress install can communicate with WordPress.org securely.
PASS: No version control systems were detected.
PASS: Your installation of WordPress doesn’t require FTP credentials to perform updates.
PASS: All of your WordPress files are writable.

This site is able to apply these updates automatically. Cool!

All of the errors keep referring to the update.php. I reuploaded the update.php from the original download but that did not resolve the problem. Should I try and redownload WordPress and upload the update.php file from that to the server?

The error basically means that it tried to do the plugin update check using HTTPS, but that failed for some reason. It falls back to doing the same check via HTTP instead, but it throws that warning to let you know that the connection is not secure.

You might check to see if your PHP install has “curl” enabled on it.

I’m assuming a call to PureNRG Hosting could answer that?

I sent them an email support ticket last night.
