  • WordPress 3.9 updated the visual editor. In doing so, many old plugins and themes which used “deprecated” code – which previously worked with the old visual editor – are now causing issues.

Please read http://wordpress.org/support/topic/wordpress-39-master-list?replies=6 and follow the troubleshooting steps to find out which plugin or theme is not playing well with the 3.9 update.

I have found that you need to download a copy of wordpress 3.9 and then copy across the wp-settings.php file from that to replace your websites copy and that should work.

It might also have something to do with increasing your php memory from 40MB

nat@cry is there a process to downloading a copy of wordpress 3.9?

Big blue button at the top right corner of this site will take you to where you can download a ZIP folder of the latest release of WordPress. You can then use an FTP client to upload it to your server. See https://codex.wordpress.org/Updating_WordPress#Manual_Update for details.

Thanks nat@cry, that gave me a tip in the right direction when trying to upgrade a client’s website manually. The upgrade was not letting me write to a lot of the files in the root directory (550 permission denied) but I was able to delete them and then re-upload them successfully. Not sure if this was a result of the hosting environment, but sometimes a little grain of info can provide the gleam of hope 😉

I downloaded a new copy of 3.9. Where do i find the wp-settings.php file?

After you unzip the file, look in the folder and you will see a bunch of .php files, a .txt file, a .html file, and 3 folders. Among the .php files you will find wp-settings.php (ie in the “root” of the folder). You then upload this file to the “root” directory aka main directory of your website. I use FileZilla as my FTP program of choice. It is free. In case you are not familiar with this process, you will need your hosting details (hostname, username, password) to manually upload WordPress files.

@dynamicwebs.com.au thank you so much i still cant figure it out i may just change hosting because this is a big mess and i cannot figure it out.

Your first port of call should be in writing to or calling your existing host, mention you have a failed WordPress upgrade and ask if they can fix it for you. If it was as quick a fix as my failed upgrade today then they should be able to sort it out in a short amount of time.

This would avoid the time finding a new host (and you seem to lack the skill to transfer your existing content to a new host) as well as the time your website and email would be offline during the change over.

I have contacted my host. They were unable to actually fix the problem with the update. When i did the 3.9 update i could not log on to my admin page. They were able to get me into the admin page but thats about it. I can not make any changes to my website because i cant see the edit pages.

My website is comedythroughcomedy.com and the error is showing up on my website.

Ah too bad they can’t help you – not sure why they can’t/won’t. I’ve only experienced this problem once so my advice is limited and potentially flawed. I’d have assumed that doing a manual upload of the WordPress files via an FTP program would resolve the problem (something the host can do too). And if the file permissions were incorrect (not letting you overwrite files) then the host could also fix this (but you could probably change them with an FTP program too). There is a chance you will have to delete some of your original WordPress files before uploading the new files you downloaded to your PC. Just don’t delete the wp-contents folder as that is where all your image uploads and media library stuff is.

It sounds like to fix this you might have to learn more about using FTP.

Posting a second forum message might not necessarily help either 😉
