After I updated to WP 3.9 my visual editor disappeared. It won’t let me add any text at all. I know that many people are having this same problem.
I have tried deactivating and reactivating all of my plugins.

I have TinyMCE Advanced downloaded and I figured that was the problem but now I am unsure. I just installed the latest version of this plugin which is supposed to be 100% compatible with WP 3.9. After installing the new version nothing changed, the visual editor is still missing.

I have emptied my cache several times with no luck.

Could this be an issue with my theme? Should I contact my theme creator?

I’m not sure what else to do. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

  • I believe some other plugin is mess around. Good that you are already tried to deactivate and reactivate the plugins. But my advise is to deactivate all plugins and check if you can type something in visual editor?

What theme you are using? Did you change and check with the theme to twenty fourteen or twenty thirteen?

When I deactivate all the plugins I can type in the visual editor, but not like it used to be because my plugins simplified the process of editing.

I have a custom theme. I am scared to try another theme because I don’t want to lose anything when I go back to my customized theme. I’m not a computer expert and I don’t want to do anything that I can’t undo and fix myself.

If I change to one of the other themes will I be able to switch back to my own eventually with little to no issues? If my theme is the culprit then I can have the creator fix it. I just want to be assured that I won’t lose anything since I’ve never done this before.

True plugin is meant to simply your job. Try to find the Culprit Plugin and deactivate (by activating one by one and check if you can edit visual) that alone or contact that plugin author regarding this may be plugin author didn’t update the plugin with compatibility of 3.9

Because in WordPress.org 3.9 changes made to tinymce editor so if any plugin related to tinymce editor then you should deactivate or update(if any).

No need to change the theme in this case.
    Hope it helps 🙂

WordPress needs to fix this bug. I have not tested all my sites but each one I check seems to have this problem. I’d rather work in text and code mode till they sort it out but my clients are going to start asking me what is wrong.

connotkj – You should not lose your theme settings when you flip themes, however:

You don’t need to deactivate the theme. It’s clearly a plugin. The best way to diagnose would be via your browser and the console. We have some directions here:

    https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors

Doing that will help you narrow down WHAT plugin it might be, as well as what it’s missing.

If that doesn’t help, make sure you’ve worked your way through the master list:

I am having the most difficult time with this…Trying to diagnose on my browser but, how do I open my wp-config.php? Where do I even begin to look for this? I am so confused. I am not a computer expert, I usually just muddle my way through things but I cannot seem to figure this out for the life of me.

I had just resolved the same problem with visual editor on one of my sites. I have managed to replicate it in my local XAMPP installation as on live linux production server.
The problem was with the plugin “navis media credit”, used in LargoProject theme. If you try to disable that plugin it will stay activated anyway and your visual editor wont work. If you switch to another theme visual editor is still not working. Only when you mannualy delete plugin via FTP from server it get’s deactivated, and visual editor then works fine.

    I hope that helps,
    regards!

how do I open my wp-config.php?

Okay, that’s a file on your server. You’ll need to log in via SFTP or SSH to do that. Do you already know of an app you can use to look at the files on your server?
