   Hi,
   I installed v2.5.1 using Fantastico via my Hostgator's cpanel.
   The account already had a primary domain and a Joomla website there.

   This wordpress blog became an addon domain and thus wordpress was installed into a subdirectory, one level down from root.

   The wordpress site is up and running. But when I click on Add Media when creating a post, I can browse to a local file but when I click upload, I get the http error and nothing uploads.

   I've seen several fixes reported as this seems to be a common problem. But many of them point to changes in the .htaccess file.

   However, fantastico didn't create an htaccess file.
   And even if I created one in notepad, I wouldn't know what to put in it.

   If you are still running the Default Permalinks it's likely you don't have a .htaccess file yet. If you change to "pretty" permalinks one will be created automatically (or you'll be prompted on what to manually add if WP can't create it).

   You could certainly create one yourself though. Empty file named .htaccess.

   I see the options for other permalinks styles, but not one that's called, "Pretty." Am I to assume you mean I should select any of the other styles? And will that just create a blank .htaccess file?
   Cuz I mentioned I can (and did) create a blank one.
   Nothing changed.
   Don't know if there's something that's supposed to be in it.
   I guess I'm amazed that wordpress doesn't work right out of the box and I'm wondering how many zillions of people are having to find work-arounds to this stupid "add image" issue. sheesh.

   wordpress works fine out of the box for the majority of people. this is evidenced time and time again by comparing the number of downloads to the number of posts on this forum.

   the simple fact is that it is impossible to insure that every facet of every function will work for everyone on every host. WP is too complex, and there are too many other variables involved.

   There is also a "user" issue involved -- and your own remarks here demonstrate that. More and more people that know absolutely nothing about having a static HTML site much less about using WP, are setting up WP blogs.

   --

   when you set up your permalinks, WP tells you if you need to take the initiative to edit your .htaccess. Its spits the code right out at you, if thats the case.

   having pretty permalinks isnt going to fix any problem with the flash uploader, though.

   I would actually look at folder permissions as well. Make sure your folder has permission to allow uploads.
