I’ve just received an email telling me my website has been updated automatically to wordpress 3.7.2.

Have I unknowingly agreed that my website can be updated without my knowledge?

If I have made a number of customizations without creating a chld theme, couldn’t the upgrade cause the site to be corrupted? Having just checked it, all seems as it should be, but I have worked on other sites using WP and a premium theme which could suffer form an automatic upgrade..

Thanks for any info, reassurance, or warnings

    Marek

Same thing happened to one of my sites. Apparently this is part of WP – see this from 2 months ago – http://wordpress.org/support/topic/auto-updates?replies=99

It’s not clear whether you’re talking about the core update or a theme update. Minor core updates are automatic by default, theme updates are only automatic unless you explicitly tell WordPress to update them automatically.

If the latter happened then you need to talk to the people who develop your website.

this is absolutely infuriating. i also just got an email saying that the site had been automatically updated. that is unacceptable.

i have made several core modifications, and THEY ARE ALL GONE!

i am so frustrated and pissed right now. my clent’s site is completely dead, and i cannot do a thing until i get back to my office tomorrow.

@andrew – updating WP to version 3.7.2 has nothing to do with what theme is being used – or am I missing something? I thought it was pretty clear it was a core update since WP went from version 3.6 to version 3.7.2. Please do correct me if I’m making an incorrect assumption.

Also, I’m the one who developed this website, so there’s no one else to talk to. And I did NOT tell WordPress to update automatically, but after reading the other very lengthy thread, apparently WP takes it upon itself to update unless I tell it not to (I believe you also participated in that thread).

Yes core updates have nothing to do with theme updates. What wasn’t clear was when you talked about your theme in relation to the core updates.

I thought it was pretty clear it was a core update since WP went from version 3.6 to version 3.7.2.

Automatic core updates were only introduced in WordPress 3.7, so perhaps you went from 3.7 to 3.7.2 rather than 3.6?

apparently WP takes it upon itself to update unless I tell it not to

Yes, WordPress will automatically do this without you telling it to. Are you looking for a way to stop this, or have you already found a way?

This is actually the first time this has happened to me. I was quite alarmed to receive the email (has the site been hacked?) but I suppose I should be relieved it was (only) WP.

To stop this, I suppose the best defense is a good offense: keep the sites updated myself. Of course, this site was one I purposely did not update because I didn’t trust the theme to be compatible with later versions of WP. LOL.

I understand from the other thread that there is a plugin available, or I can also add a couple lines to wp-config.php
/** Disable All Automatic Updates */
    define( ‘AUTOMATIC_UPDATER_DISABLED’, true );

    Is that correct?

    Yes that’s right.

Yes I got the automatic update email to WP 3.7.2 this morning
and thought it was spam , after all how could anyone update my site
without my permission ? However looks like I fell into the version 3.7 trap also. I am running a ecommerce plugin that has not been approved for
even vers 3.7 , so I have no idea if it will still work as it is meant to.
Worst case scenario is I might have to restore my last database backup
unfortunately losing a weeks product updates and order histories.
WOrdpress Do you think you should have warned users about this before
just incorporating this? Looks like I will be putting in the WP-conf.php
    patch to stop autoupdating.

I also received the automatic update notice for all websites.. the dashboard should have some helpful links about this for new installs at the least.. so we may avoid the hassles bound to be discovered..

    Hi Andrew

Thanks for your quick response. I have installed the plug-in you mentioned ‘ Update-control’ which says it needs WP 3.7 or higher. It says it is activated but I’ve checked my website is WP 3.4.2. So does that mean it will not work even though it installed ok and using it, I have turned off auto-update?

This is a pressing matter as I have a complex Wp site using a Karma theme and a number of ‘getarounds’ to achieve the unique layouts of the site, but it is not built as a child theme, so an upgrade would delete all the modifications and after so much time since designing it, it would be a nightmare to try to re-build it

    Regards
    Marek

Sorry I’m not sure I understand. You don’t need the plugin if your website is 3.4.2, because automatic updates were only introduced in 3.7.

I did not know that automatic updates had been introduced, nor that they were introduced in 3.7 so now I know. Thanks.
