This might sound strange but I have tested and the problem is definitely related to this plug in. It started occurring in the latest few updates when I updated to the latest version.

My page titles are in a title strip and a dozen pixels below there is a thin grey line that should not be there. How to get rid of it?

Not an WPSEO issue. WPSEO does not add front-end styling.

It is caused by the below inline style rule, I presume it comes from your theme.
