I have a blog that I have kept for 5 years and now I am switching the theme of the blog (posts) to a whole new kind of blog and I want to keep my old posts for search engines and at the same time start as if it is a brand new blog. Is that possible?

    Objective
-Keep old posts in the backend
-Show a brand new blog on top of the old blog
-Start new blog independent so that RSS readers do not get confused with new different posts to what they are used to.

  • How can you have an old blog and a new blog at the same URL? It has to be one or the other.

Sounds like you should keep your old blog online, so search engine links will find it. Make the top post in the old blog that you are now at a new URL. I’d add that to the sidebar on every page also.

Set up your new blog in a different folder on the same domain.

Set up a custom 404 page on the old blog so that when someone is looking for a page on the old site that does not exist it tells them to go to your new blog and gives them a link.

Thanks for the ideas. After doing some searching and experimenting I was able to come up with a solution that I need. With the help of PHP i am doing a 301 to any post past a certain date to my new blog. so when search engines and people linking to my “old” site they will be redirected to the new site. Now all I have to do is only display the new posts in the “new” blog and I am set. I was able to find a plugin that did 301 but for the whole site so I created my own that works by date… maybe i’ll turn it into a plug in 🙂

    Thanks…
