Their is a bug in the all in one Seo plugin.
Google does not recognize the 'description' and doesn't use it in search results, if you use the plug in search for your posts on Google and it will display text from the actual document instead of the description because it doesn't recognise the description, it doesn't work properly in the plug in.

This is google, not a bug in the plugin.
1) Look at the source code of a page in your site and you'll see the correctly generated meta description.
2) Google for articles about Google not using the meta description anymore.

Google does use the description tag as it shows up on every one of my webpages where I don't use Wordpress.
Goto http://developers.evrsoft.com/seotool/ and put in a wordpress url that uses the seo plugin and it will say 'description tag is missing' - It doesnt show up properly and therefore google doesnt recognize it.

As I said before, do a search on the matter:
As for the plugin not generating the meta tag correctly, I suggest you also research how it should be displayed. Then compare that to how it is actually displayed.

I use the description tag on all my sites, they show up perfectly in Google.
However for some reason NONE of my or any wordpress blogs I have checked which use the plugin show the description, ever.
I know it looks right in the source but SOMETHING is wrong and it isnt with google.
Goto http://developers.evrsoft.com/seotool/ and put this url in as an example http://courtneytuttle.com/2008/07/03/the-three-keys-to-serious-freelance-writing-income/
It will say 'description meta tag' is missing.
Then put in an url of a normal html page, say this - www.techemail.com - It will show the description tag fine
I dont know what it is, you're right the tag is in the right place but Google and that tool doesnt seem to recognisize it for some reason yet it does for all my other sites and any other non wordpress site i check that uses the tag.

I'm having a similar problem whereby Google, rather than using the meta description from my website in the search result, picks up some text from the "About Us" widget in my site's sidebar.
I've done some research. My conclusion: Google determines whether the meta description is related to the content. If the meta description doesn't pass the test, Google scraps it in favor of the nearest and next best snippet that best represents the content in the page.
But this is merely a best guess based on what I've read.

My theory-on-the-fly is collapsing as I type.
Google's search result for my home page has variously returned the meta-description in one case and a text snippet from the "About Us" sidebar widget in another...it all seems dependent on the search terms that I enter.

I have noted this problem as well and believe all in one seo does have a bug. It's not helpful but I haven't found a solution yet. Hopefully the author will take a look and check it out.

It might be a long shot, but I have noticed that the description tags and keyword tags generated by AIO SEO are not technically compliant, as it closes the tag without a space preceding it...
e.g
<meta name="description" content="content"/>
where it should be
<meta name="description" content="content" />
Now this might not actually affect anything, but who knows...
