A security plugin (Bulletproof Security) pointed out to me that the following executable files (which are not located in the plugins folder) are executables, not folders, and so should have permissions of 644… but they were set to 755:

    ~/wp-content/ewww/gifsicle
    ~/wp-content/ewww/jpegtran
    ~/wp-content/ewww/optipng
    ~/wp-content/ewww/pngquant

When I set the permissions to 644, they got changed for a moment, then reverted to 755. Is the EWWW plugin doing that?

Is 755 the preferred permission level for these files?
(If so, my hosting company is not so happy about that.)

There is one other file in there that I was able to set to 644:

    ~/wp-content/ewww/jpegtran-custom

    Thanks

Yes it does. You can’t execute files with 644 permissions. If your host doesn’t want you executing files, there are other things they can do besides changing permissions…

Your only other option is to use the cloud api, but that costs money.
