Custom category prefix (possible to have none?)

My permalink structure is set up like this:
http://example.com/%post_id%/
so post 10 would be here:
http://example.com/10/
I have left the category prefix blank so now it defaults to
http://example.com/category/categoryname/
but what I really want is
http://example.com/categoryname/
I have tried to override the default by entering “/” as the prefix, but it doesn’t work.
Does anyone know how to do this?
Note: If it matters, my General Options are
WordPress address (URI): http://example.com/weblog
Blog address (URI): http://example.com
