I was using your plugin to let members upload their own avatars, and also to host my custom default avatar.

But when your plugin is used for the custom avatar, avatars don’t load properly. Sometimes you see them. Sometimes the default avatar shows up until you reload the page. I don’t want users having to constantly reload the page just to see avatars.

When I disable your plugin, avatars work fine. So I figured the problem was only with your custom default avatar option.

I set my default avatar through my theme’s functions.php instead and again everything worked perfectly. Until I re-activated your plugin. Now it’s overriding the default avatar option included in functions.php. So it appears the only way I can have a custom default avatar (a necessity) is to use your plugin to do it. But when I use your plugin to do that, it breaks avatars in general and keeps putting the default avatar on the site instead of custom avatars (and even Gravatars) until reloading.

Is there any way around this? I’d prefer to just let functions.php take care of the custom avatar.

The site is AllIndieWriters.com, but I’ve disabled the plugin for now because it was making it the community look a bit spammy with the default avatar overriding everything.

    Thanks!

  • Hi, I haven’t encountered the problem before. It sounds like either a caching or JavaScript issue. What other plugins do you have active?

I disabled caching, cleared it, and disabled all other plugins for testing and I still had the problem. It’s only when this plugin is activated, although it affects the default gravatars too; not just the local avatars. I also tried switching to the default theme briefly and I still had problems with the avatars.

The caching plugin I use is WP Fastest Cache. Caching is disabled for logged in users (like me), but the problem happened even when logged in (on my admin account and a subscriber-level test account).

At first I thought it might have been an issue specific to bbPress where I first noticed it, but it was also happening in the WP admin area in the comments list.

If it helps at all, it never happened until the most recent update (maybe the one before if they were close together and I just didn’t notice it immediately). I’m not sure exactly what changed there though.

It also only seems to happen when I use your plugin to upload a custom default avatar. If I remove that and leave the little guy with the hat, I don’t have this refresh problem at all.

I don’t have any further insight on what this problem could be. Would you be able to show me the problem in action on the site? Also, what code are you using in your functions.php?

I checked with the guy behind my caching plugin and he said his plugin doesn’t cache images so it shouldn’t have affected them. So I disabled your plugin for a while. It couldn’t have been anything in functions.php either because the problem happened even when I switched to the default theme, so those settings wouldn’t have been active.

When your latest update came out I updated and reactivated it. I ran fresh tests and it seems to be resolved now. No idea what you changed or how it might have affected it, but something got sorted somewhere along the line. So there’s no problem at this point. 🙂

Okay, I’m not sure that I actually changed anything related to the how the avatars are retrieved. That’s been pretty consistent in my plugin for awhile. But, no worries.
